Due to the characteristics of low equipment investment and simple process in recycling polystyrene (EPS) foam by melt extrusion, the performance of the recycled EPS particles can be better maintained under the condition of a reasonable process. EPS recycling extrusion production lines are widely used. With the continuous emergence of new recycling extrusion systems and new plastic recycling processes, the quality of recycled polystyrene (EPS) particles recovered by melt extrusion is also improving.

1. Brief introduction:

The production process of RKE series EPS foam recycling includes plastic foam cold pressing/hot pressing, sorting, crushing, washing, drying, defoaming, extrusion and granulation. The overall process needs to be adjusted according to different production requirements. The final product can be divided into light-colored translucent particles, opaque particles and mixed particles with small impurities.


2. EPS foam recycling production process

1. EPS foam sorting
In this sorting process, it is necessary to remove large impurities and reduce the influence of plastic mixing and granulation on the properties of recycled materials. Recycle waste plastics of different grades separately to maintain the physical and chemical properties of recycled plastics to the greatest extent.

2. EPS foam crushing and washing
After sorting, the large pieces of foamed plastic are crushed into small pieces with a diameter of about 1cm by a crushing machine. A fan will send them to the washing tank through a conveying pipeline. A rotating slide in the sink agitates and propels the debris as it spins. After washing, most of the residual dirt on the surface of the foam plastic is washed away.

3. Drying and defoaming of EPS foam
The washed foam fragments enter the cyclone dehydrator for dehydration.
Since the density of the dehydrated EPS foam fragments is still small and the moisture content is relatively large, the foam fragments can be defoamed and densified at this time.
The EPS foam fragments are sent to the drying and densifying agglomerator, and the density of the foam fragments increases after drying, from less than 0.3g/cm3 before treatment to 0.6-0.8g/cm3.

4. Extrusion and granulation of EPS foam
During this process, the EPS foam fragments transition from solid to semi-melt state to molten state under extruder heating and screw shearing. The plastic material's residual foaming agent and gas are generated in the vacuum exhaust device and completely discharged under negative pressure. Various impurities and infusible in the material are filtered out by the filtering process of the filter screen. After exiting the die, the strands are cooled by cooling water and cut into uniform particles by a pelletizer or are cut into pellets by a rotating blade at the die (water ring pelletizing system). The particles can be bagged after the cyclone dehydration system removes the moisture on the surface of the particles.

The integrated extrusion and granulation system can perform drying, defoaming and extrusion at the same time. After the foaming device, most of the water and air bubbles are removed under the stirring of heating and paddle and then enter the feeding section of the extruder through the forced feeding device.
The integrated extruder simplifies the recycling process and can recycle and process EPS foam materials with high moisture content, which is more widely used than the low shear and low degradation single-screw extrusion granulation module.
In addition, to increase the utilization efficiency of the filter screen, some low-degradation granulation systems and integrated granulation systems have adopted the newly developed backwash filter screen filter system, which uses the backwash pressure of the melt during use. To clean the impurities on the filter screen, the service time of the filter screen can be extended by 2-5 times, which greatly improves the filter screen's working efficiency while reducing workers' labor intensity.


4. Components of RKE series EPS foam granulation line

RKE series EPS foam granulation line is mainly composed of: PES foam pretreatment equipment (cold press/hot press), conveyor, shredder, automatic feeder, dust removal and dehumidification device, drying and densification equipment, extruder, screen changing device, die head, water ring pelletizer, vibrating screen, centrifugal dehydrator, cyclone silo, control panel, etc.


5. RKE system application scope

The service life of polystyrene foam materials is short, about 50% of the polystyrene foam products have a service life of only 2 years, and 97% of the polystyrene foam products have a service life of fewer than 10 years, increasing the amount of waste every year.
In terms of product types, the main sources of waste polystyrene materials are disposable foam packaging materials, foam shock absorption materials, disposable lunch boxes, disposable containers, household items, children's toys, pipes, insulation boards, building materials and so on.
